James Edelman is a recent appointment to the Federal Court of Australia, based in Brisbane. He graduated from The University of Western Australia with a Bachelor of Economics in 1995 and a Bachelor of Laws with First Class Honours in 1996.

Sir William Blackstone (1723–80) wrote the most famous and influential treatise on Anglo-American-Australian common law—the four volume Commentaries on the Laws of England (1765–69)—but he was also a major figure in 18th century public, academic and cultural life. Blackstone’s biographer, Emeritus Professor Wilfrid Prest, investigates this influential legal writer in his diverse roles as academic, bibliophile, architect, historian, reformer, critic, poet and politician through the lens of 18th century political, legal and cultural life. Emeritus Professor Wilfrid Prest has published widely on Sir William Blackstone’s life and works. He studied for his Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Melbourne, took a doctorate in Modern History from Oxford and came to Adelaide as a lecturer in the Department of History in 1966. 2017 Selden Society inaugural Lord Atkin lecture by the Hon Chief Justice Susan Kiefel AC - YouTube Supreme Court Library Queensland

An annual Lord Atkin Lecture has been introduced this year to mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of Lord Atkin – one of the common law’s most influential judges. During his judicial career Atkin was not only respected as a technically proficient lawyer but admired for his insight and judgment. It was this combination of qualities that produced a number of judgments of lasting importance and global influence. The Hon Susan Kiefel AC was appointed Chief Justice of Australia in January 2017. At the time of her appointment she had been a judge of the High Court since September 2007 and had previously served as a judge of the Federal Court of Australia and the Supreme Court of Queensland. Chief Justice Kiefel was admitted to the Queensland Bar in 1975 and, in 1987, was the first woman in Queensland to be appointed Queen’s Counsel.
